Budgeting and Debt ManagementBudgeting is a great
place to start when trying to handle your debt. Before you are
able to determine what steps to take to get out of debt, you
must first know how much money you can spend on debt management.
Each individual or family is different and will have different
budgetary needs. The easiest way to make a first draft of a budget is to record
every expenditure, no matter how small, for at least a month.
Don’t forget to think about what one-time purchases will be
looming in the future as well as annual needs like taxes,
membership fees, or holiday gifts. Your budget should include
money for emergency expenses as well as more common needs like
car or house repair.
Keep in mind that prices do tend to go up with time. It is a
good idea not to make your budget too tight or you might have to
borrow money from one part of the budget to pay for something
else. After you have figured your initial budget, live it at
least a month and determine what changes need to be made.
If you are trying to pay off debt, it might be a good idea to
limit extra spending on things like vacation, entertainment, and
dining out. However, it is unrealistic to believe you could
eliminate this part of the budget altogether. Limit yourself in
this area to a level that you think you could live by month by
month. Do not forget to plan to save. Even if you are trying to pay off
debt, it would be a good idea to save to prevent from having to
go into further debt in the future. If you do not plan to save
in your budget, you probably will not.
To help manage your debt, budget as many funds as possible to
paying off your debts. Aim at paying off high interest debt like
credit cards first. Be willing to limit yourself in other areas
in order to concentrate on getting yourself debt free. Do not
continue to use your credit cards if you are trying to pay them
off.
Remember that budgets should not be set in stone. Your
circumstances will change, and surprises will happen. Be
flexible, and do not give up if you do not meet your budget.
Keep changing it until you have a budget you can live by. |
