Debt Management Options

There are several options in order to get out of debt. Research carefully to determine which debt management option is right for you.

The most simple debt management option is to come up with a personal plan to get out of debt. There are several steps you can take to help yourself, particularly if your debt is not too severe. Set small goals for yourself (e.g. I will pay off this credit card in the next three months) and work towards them. Aim at setting yourself free from one debt at a time. When one goal is met, apply the money that you were using to pay off that debt to a new goal. Start with the debt with the highest interest rate, but more importantly just get started.

There are other options available to those who cannot stick to a personal plan. Debt management plans (DMP) are offered to those who need extra help. The company that administers your DMP will collect monthly payments from you and apply it to your accounts as scheduled. A DMP might be right for you if you are barely making the minimum payments or starting to fall behind on your bills. An accredited credit counselor can talk to you about this option and the following options.

Debt negotiation is more severe than a DMP and is not a good idea in most situations. Only those who are severely behind in paying their bills can really benefit from such a plan of action. In this option of debt management a debt negotiator will arrange for your debts to be severely cut. This can have a negative affect on your credit, so should be carefully considered before any action is taken.

The final and most extreme option for debt management is bankruptcy. Like debt negotiation, it is not an option in every situation. Bankruptcy will affect your credit history for years to come and will limit financial freedom. Bankruptcy should only be considered when the above options were tried or considered and found unsatisfactory for the situation.

Each financial situation is different, and each family will have to decide what debt management option will most benefit them. This is a decision that should be made only after much consideration and professional advice.
